How to Train Your Mind Like You Train Your Horse
As equestrians, we understand the immense dedication, patience, and love that goes into preparing our horses for each ride. From the moment we arrive at the stable, there's a routine we rarely deviate from: grooming, warming up, and practicing groundwork. However, amidst all the preparation for our equine partners, there’s another pivotal part of the equation we often overlook—ourselves.

Just as every horse requires a comprehensive regimen to perform at its best, so does our mind. Imagine approaching your mental focus and emotional balance with the same rigor as you do your horse training. Here’s how we can take cues from our equestrian habits to enhance our mental preparedness:

1.  Grooming the Mind: This doesn't involve brushes or hoof picks but rather cleansing our mental space. Engage in activities that clear your mind.  I like to focus on the grooming, completely, and clear my mind from all the other stuff going on in my head, let it sit in the corner until I am done riding.

2. Warming Up: Before jumping onto your horses back, allow your mind a period of gentle engagement. Connect with the horse, how it is feeling, how you are feeling, visualize what you want the ride to look like.

3. Groundwork for Your Mind:  Just as groundwork establishes communication and trust with your horse, set a foundational practice for finding your confidence.  Whether it's through mindfulness, visualization, or even playing games with anxiety to confidence, these exercises promote mental agility, resilience, and confidence.

4. Consistency is Key: We know that regular training boosts our horse's skills and confidence. Similarly, nurturing your mind daily builds focus and emotional stability.

By drawing parallels between horse training and mental self-care, we create a harmonious balance that benefits both rider and horse. After all, a prepared mind is just as crucial for a successful ride as a well-trained horse.  You can do this!  Bring the joy back into your riding and it helps with general life too.

Hey there! I’m Elise Hittinger—Fear Slayer, Confidence Creator, and your go-to Courage Coach.

Once upon a time, I was that fearless kid riding deep into Angeles National Forest without a second thought. Then bam—life threw me a plot twist. A horse flipped on me, pinning me beneath it, and fear crept in like an uninvited guest who wouldn’t leave.

That moment tested everything. But here’s the wild part—I walked away with only bruises and a divine reminder that I wasn’t done yet. Fear may have stolen my joy for a while, but it did not get the final say.

Fast forward to a move to Kentucky, where the trails were calling my name. I had two choices: let fear keep the reins or take them back. Spoiler alert—I took them back. Now, I help other riders (and, honestly, anyone sick of fear running their life) do the same.

I make fear pack its little bags and GTFO. Whether it’s through hypnotherapy, NLP, or a little well-placed humor, I help people trade anxiety for confidence, doubt for courage, and overthinking for action.

So, if you’re ready to kick fear to the curb and rediscover the joy you deserve—I’m here for it. Let’s do this.
