The Hidden Link Between Rider Balance and Riding Confidence
Have you ever had a little kid sitting on your shoulders?

At first, it feels fun. Their weight is centered, and you can walk along just fine.

But then they start wiggling.
They lean one way. Then the other. Maybe they shift suddenly, and what happens?

You instantly tighten up.
Your body starts compensating.
You grip.
You brace.
You overcorrect.
And suddenly, walking doesn’t feel so easy anymore.

Now picture yourself on your horse.

It’s really not that different.

When your balance feels centered, riding feels smoother. Your body moves with your horse instead of against them. You breathe easier. You feel more in control.

But when your balance feels off?

Everything changes.
You grip.
You brace.
You start working harder than you need to.

And here’s the hidden part:
Your brain often interprets that physical instability as danger.
That’s why rider balance and rider confidence are so closely connected.

🐴 A Simple Way to Feel Your Balance Again
Rider exploring balance in the saddle by shifting weight and returning to center
Here’s something to play with the next time you ride.
At a standstill or an easy walk:
  • Lean just a little to the left… then come back to center
  • Lean a little to the right… then come back to center
  • Tip slightly forward… then center yourself
  • Tip slightly back… then come back to center
Nothing dramatic. Just enough to feel it.
Notice what happens.
Where do you feel secure?
Where do you feel wobbly?
Where does your body want to grip or brace?

Because here’s the truth:

What doesn’t feel right is just as important as feeling balanced.

That’s how you learn.
You begin to recognize:

"Ohhh... this is what off-center feels like."
"And This is what centered feels like."

That awareness is powerful.

Because balance is not about never moving.
It’s about knowing how to come back.

And when your body believes that…
Your confidence follows.

🐴 Final Thought
Confidence is not just built in your mind.
It’s built in your body too.
Sometimes feeling unsteady has nothing to do with fear… and everything to do with learning where center is again.
And the more you practice finding your balance…
The steadier everything else becomes.

Hey there! I’m Elise Hittinger—Fear Slayer, Confidence Creator, and your go-to Courage Coach.

Once upon a time, I was that fearless kid riding deep into Angeles National Forest without a second thought. Then bam—life threw me a plot twist. A horse flipped on me, pinning me beneath it, and fear crept in like an uninvited guest who wouldn’t leave.

That moment tested everything. But here’s the wild part—I walked away with only bruises and a divine reminder that I wasn’t done yet. Fear may have stolen my joy for a while, but it did not get the final say.

Fast forward to a move to Kentucky, where the trails were calling my name. I had two choices: let fear keep the reins or take them back. Spoiler alert—I took them back. Now, I help other riders (and, honestly, anyone sick of fear running their life) do the same.

I make fear pack its little bags and GTFO. Whether it’s through hypnotherapy, NLP, or a little well-placed humor, I help people trade anxiety for confidence, doubt for courage, and overthinking for action.

So, if you’re ready to kick fear to the curb and rediscover the joy you deserve—I’m here for it. Let’s do this.
