How to Tell the Difference Between Anxiety and Instinct

How to Tell the Difference Between Anxiety and Instinct

Have you ever stopped and wondered...

"Is this my instinct trying to protect me...or is it anxiety talking?"

You're not alone.

It's one of the most common questions I hear from riders rebuilding their confidence.

The tricky part is that both anxiety and instinct are trying to keep you safe.

The difference is how they do it.

🐴 Instinct Looks at What's Happening Today

Instinct pays attention to what's right in front of you.

Maybe your horse suddenly feels off.

Maybe their ears pin when you tighten the girth.

Maybe the footing isn't as safe as you expected.

Instinct notices what's happening in the present moment and encourages you to investigate before moving forward.

It's calm.

It's curious.

It's paying attention.

🐴 Anxiety Looks Backward

Anxiety has a different job.

It remembers.

It remembers the accident.

The fall.

The bolt.

The embarrassment.

Then it quietly whispers,

"What if it happens again?"

Before you know it, your mind has traveled years into the past—or miles into the future—without ever noticing what's actually happening today.

🐴 Ask Better Questions

The next time you feel nervous before riding, pause for a moment.

Instead of asking,

"Should I ride?"

Try asking:

  • What am I noticing right now?
  • Is there evidence that something is unsafe?
  • Am I responding to today...
    or remembering yesterday?

Those questions can completely change the conversation happening in your mind.

🐴 Help Your Body Become Part of the Answer

One thing I've learned is that anxiety becomes much louder when our body doesn't feel its best.

When we're tired...

Stiff...

Sore...

Or running on empty...

Our brain naturally becomes more protective.

The healthier and stronger our body feels, the easier it becomes to recognize the difference between genuine instinct and old anxiety.

Your body gives your brain evidence.

And evidence builds confidence.

🐴 Final Thoughts

You don't have to eliminate anxiety before you enjoy riding again.

You simply have to learn which voice you're listening to.

Instinct helps you make wise decisions.

Anxiety tries to make every decision for you.

The more you learn to recognize the difference, the easier it becomes to ride with confidence, trust yourself, and enjoy your horse again.

Hey there! I’m Elise Hittinger—Fear Slayer, Confidence Creator, and your go-to Courage Coach.

Once upon a time, I was that fearless kid riding deep into Angeles National Forest without a second thought. Then bam—life threw me a plot twist. A horse flipped on me, pinning me beneath it, and fear crept in like an uninvited guest who wouldn’t leave.

That moment tested everything. But here’s the wild part—I walked away with only bruises and a divine reminder that I wasn’t done yet. Fear may have stolen my joy for a while, but it did not get the final say.

Fast forward to a move to Kentucky, where the trails were calling my name. I had two choices: let fear keep the reins or take them back. Spoiler alert—I took them back. Now, I help other riders (and, honestly, anyone sick of fear running their life) do the same.

I make fear pack its little bags and GTFO. Whether it’s through hypnotherapy, NLP, or a little well-placed humor, I help people trade anxiety for confidence, doubt for courage, and overthinking for action.

So, if you’re ready to kick fear to the curb and rediscover the joy you deserve—I’m here for it. Let’s do this.
