You Are NOT Your Riding Anxiety
Take a look at these two photos.

In this one, I'm a grown woman, hopelessly tangled in my own jacket and laughing so hard I can't even untangle myself.

In this one, I'm about 10 years old, riding my pony, with nothing on my mind but being with that pony.
Same girl.
Very different layers.
I've Collected More Layers Than an ONION!
Somewhere between that little girl and today, I started collecting anxiety. Layer after layer after layer.
Some of those layers came from:
- Being kicked in the head by my pony.
- Being bucked off 483 times before I STOPPED counting!
- Falling off my horse in front of BILL GATES. Yes, THAT Bill Gates!
- Being so anxious about the dentist that I used to pass out in the waiting room before a simple cleaning!
Each experience had the potential to add another layer of fear. Another expectation of what might go wrong. Another reason to hold back.
And after enough layers, it's easy to think, “This is just who I am.”
Anxiety Is a Heavy Winter Coat
Here's how I think about it now.
Anxiety is like a heavy winter coat. We put it on because it helps protect us.
But over time, we forget we're even wearing it.
Then one day, the sun comes out. It's getting HOT.
And we're STILL wearing that coat!
WAIT!!! We can learn to TAKE IT OFF!
We don't have to hate the coat. It served a purpose. But it doesn't have to be our entire wardrobe.
Sometimes We're Just Tangled Up
Which brings me back to that jacket photo.
There I was, arm stuck, going nowhere, laughing at myself. Sometimes we're so tangled up in what we're wearing that we forget we're allowed to take it off.
Anxiety can feel just like that. Twisted around us so long that it feels like part of the outfit. Part of us.
It isn't.
What It Feels Like to Start Clearing the Layers
When you begin clearing those old layers and resetting your responses, something shifts.
The RELIEF.
Your shoulders relax.
You sit a little taller.
You feel lighter and more comfortable in your own skin.
And you start rediscovering the person you were before anxiety became such a familiar companion.
This isn't about becoming someone completely different. It's about discovering who you've been underneath those layers all along.
Are You Really “An Anxious Rider”?
Let's talk about you for a minute.
Have you started introducing yourself as “an anxious rider”? Said it to your trainer? Your barn friends? Maybe even your horse?
I'm going to gently challenge that.
What if anxiety is something you've experienced, learned, and collected—not WHO you are?
Because if you collected it, that means there was a time before you had it. And if there was a time before, change is possible.
That girl who loved her horse more than anything? She's still in there. She's just wearing a LOT of coats.
